A luxury rate should buy more than a marble lobby. We test the room, the bed, the breakfast and the transfer, then publish what the stay cost after tax and extras. A property lands here only if the service holds up when something goes wrong.
An overwater villa is the most photographed room in travel and one of the easiest to overpay for. Here is what the rate buys, what it hides, and how to choose an atoll that suits the trip you are actually taking.
A chalet hotel sells wood, snow and a fire. The best ones also get the boring things right: a warm boot room, a bed that works at altitude and a bill without surprises.
What we look for
Every luxury stay guide is checked against the same standard: is it worth the money, does the detail hold up on the ground, and would we recommend it to a friend without a warning attached. When a stay or a route falls short, the caveat goes in the guide.
Where figures matter we defer to public bodies such as UN Tourism and the relevant national tourism board, then sanity-check them against our own trips before publishing.
